A case that began with a frantic search for a missing dog and ended with the discovery of the animal’s body inside a trash bin is now under investigation in Astros, Kynouria. A 46-year-old man was arrested on the night of July 27 in connection with the case, and a file has been opened against him for violating animal welfare laws.
The dog was owned, neutered, and microchipped. According to information released by the Tripoli animal welfare group “Arcadia Animal Care,” the dog had gone missing the night before, and its owner had been searching for it. The search ended tragically the next day when the animal was found dead among the trash, with wire wrapped around its neck.
A key break in the case came from security camera footage in the area. The footage shows a man dragging the dog’s lifeless body and then placing it in the trash bin.
Publishing the video sparked strong public reaction, and the footage was turned over to the police officers handling the investigation.
Officers from the North Kynouria Police Station arrested the 46-year-old that same night. According to a statement from the Greek Police, the accused is implicated, based on a complaint, in the killing of a dog owned by a local resident, reportedly around midday on July 27 in a community within the Municipality of North Kynouria.
According to reports, the 46-year-old claims he found the dog already dead outside his home and then decided to dispose of the body by throwing it in the bin. This claim is part of the ongoing investigation and has not been confirmed.
The video documents the transport and disposal of the dead animal, but it doesn’t answer the most critical question on its own: how and when the dog died. For that reason, the body was collected and handed over to the relevant authority for examination, in order to determine, as far as possible, the cause and circumstances of death.
The veterinary exam, the video evidence, witness statements, and other collected evidence will determine whether and how the arrested man is connected to the animal’s death itself, not just the disposal of its body. The 46-year-old was brought before the relevant judicial authorities, while the preliminary investigation continues under the North Kynouria Police Station.
