Drone Found off Lefkada Carried Large Quantities of Explosives

Greek authorities are investigating the discovery of an explosive-laden unmanned sea drone off Lefkada, with scenarios ranging from a strike on a Russian vessel to possible provocation

The case of an unmanned sea vessel (USV) discovered off the coast of Lefkada early Friday is developing into a thriller, as it was found to be carrying a large quantity of explosives.

The discovery has put the Coast Guard, the Hellenic Navy, and the National Intelligence Service (EYP) on high alert as they try to determine both its destination and intended target. The drone is reportedly of Ukrainian manufacture.

Several scenarios are being examined. Investigators are exploring the possibility that one of the intended targets may have been a Russian vessel, as a similar attack took place near the port of Port Said in March 2026, when a Russian tanker was struck by a sea drone. At the time, Russia had publicly denounced the operation and the attack.

At the same time, authorities are not ruling out the possibility of a provocation operation, leaving all scenarios open regarding the motives behind the presence of the unmanned vessel in Greek territorial waters.

The vessel is now under the supervision of the Armed Forces, while the National Intelligence Service has already taken over the investigation, examining every element in an effort to clarify the circumstances of the case.

According to reports, the drone is equipped with sensors, antennas, and advanced communications technology, features that point either to military or scientific use.

The unmanned sea drone was discovered with its engine still running inside a cave off the coast of Vasiliki in Lefkada.
