A 14-year-old girl escaped after being attacked in a shopping mall restroom in the Athens suburb of Marousi and alerted nearby police officers, who arrested the suspect following a brief chase.

A 19-year-old Egyptian national was arrested on Sunday night after attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl inside a shopping mall in the northern Athens suburb of Marousi, according to Greek police.

Police said the incident took place shortly after 11 p.m. on July 12. The suspect followed the teenager into the shopping mall’s restroom, trapped her inside, removed his clothes and attempted to sexually assault her.

The 14-year-old reportedly resisted and managed to escape before informing officers from the DIAS motorcycle police unit, who were on patrol in the mall’s parking area.

Police quickly located the suspect and arrested him after a brief foot chase.

The 19-year-old was taken to the Marousi police department, where a case was filed against him on charges of attempted rape.
