An Athens court has found two Greek police officers guilty in the rape case of a 19-year-old woman, delivering a verdict that differed from the prosecutor’s earlier recommendation that they be acquitted.
The Mixed Jury Court convicted the two officers of rape committed jointly without the victim’s consent, after reclassifying the original charge of gang rape. The guilty verdict was reached by majority decision.
One of the convicted officers was also unanimously found guilty of unlawfully processing personal data. According to the court, he had recorded the assault using a camera concealed in a bag.
Third Officer Acquitted
A third police officer, who had been charged as an accessory to rape, was acquitted by majority decision.
The court adjourned proceedings until later in the day, when it is expected to determine the sentences to be imposed on the two convicted officers.
