A significant environmental incident has unfolded in the wetland of Analipsi, Hersonissos, at the mouth of the Aposelemi River, a critical habitat for migratory birds and rare flora and fauna.
On the morning of Friday February 20, residents reported discovering dozens of dead fish, birds, ducks, and frogs along the wetland. The shocking scene, captured on video, shows a struggling bird gasping for life and numerous fish washed ashore.
Locals, alarmed by the sight, immediately notified the authorities. While the cause of the mass die-off is still under investigation, experts speaking to the news outlet Patris.gr suggested that human activity may not be to blame.
This period coincides with a natural bloom of phytoplankton, which can deplete oxygen levels in the water and create hypoxic conditions, suffocating aquatic life.
Authorities confirmed that scientists will visit the site to collect samples for analysis in specialized laboratories, aiming to determine the precise cause of this environmental disaster.
