Fatal Crash on Ionian Motorway Near Agrinio

Authorities said a 74-year-old driver was killed and his wife seriously injured after their car was struck by a truck on the Ionian Motorway near the western city of Agrinio.

A 74-year-old man was killed and his wife seriously injured in a traffic collision involving a truck and a passenger car on the Ionian Motorway near Agrinio in western Greece, according to local reports.

Authorities said the crash occurred when the driver of the car allegedly reversed suddenly on the highway, causing the heavy vehicle traveling behind him to slam into the rear of the car.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the elderly driver to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where doctors confirmed his death.

His wife, who was also inside the vehicle at the time of the collision, suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation.

The Ionian Motorway, known in Greece as the Ionia Odos (A5), is one of the country’s main highway corridors linking western mainland Greece with key regional cities and transport routes.
