A fire broke out in Neos Kosmos area on Monday afternoon (August 31, 2026), under unclear circumstances in a fifth-floor apartment of a building on Ekataiou Street, near Evdoxou Street.
The Fire Service’s operations center was notified around 3:00 p.m. and immediately dispatched a large response of 12 firefighters, four vehicles, and a specialized ladder truck. Police units also assisted by cordoning off the area and directing traffic.
While initial, unconfirmed reports suggested no one was trapped inside, firefighters made a grim discovery while working to put out the flames: the body of a person, whose identity remains unknown, was found inside the apartment.
Quick action by firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to other apartments in the building. There are currently no active flames, and crews are now in the mop-up phase, carefully checking for any remaining hot spots hidden beneath debris or objects.
Athens’ Arson Investigation Unit has opened a preliminary inquiry to determine what caused the fire and the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
