A 55-year-old Greek citizen will remain in custody until a decision is made on whether he will be extradited to Germany on a European warrant listing charges related to sabotage efforts against German warships in a Hamburg shipyard.
The man was arrested days ago in the village of Koptero, in the northeast border prefecture of Rhodope.
He was led before a local appeals court prosecutor on Wednesday as part of the extradition process. A decision will be taken by justices serving on an appellate council for the province of Thrace, according to police sources.
He remains incarcerated in a jail in the town of Komotini.
The European arrest warrant was issued last October and concerned seven cases of attempted sabotage on five different Germany Navy warships, which are being built at the facilities of the shipbuilder Blohm & Voss, which operates in the port of Hamburg and is one of the most important such industrial units in Europe.
According to German media reports, authorities in the country have focused their investigations on, among others, an incident in early 2025 in which 20 kilograms of sandblasting material were found inside the engine block of the corvette “Emden.”
A second incident appears to be linked with the corvette “Köln”, where suspect, allegedly with another man, a Romanian national, “tripped” a main circuit breaker in June, cutting off the power. Media report that the actions were detected in time and serious damage to the vessels was prevented.
