Three people were killed when a private helicopter crashed near the heliport on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, authorities said.
The helicopter went down in the Tholos area, a short distance from the island’s heliport, and a fire broke out at the crash site following the impact.
The bodies of all three occupants, reportedly a recently married British couple and the Greek pilot, were recovered from the wreckage, according to local reports.
Greece’s Fire Service said its operations center was alerted to the incident at approximately 6:17 p.m. local time. Two firefighters and a fire engine were initially deployed, while a rescue team was dispatched from the nearby island of Syros aboard a RAFNAR rescue vessel operated by the Fire Service.
A doctor from the island’s regional medical clinic was also sent to the scene.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
