Greece’s National Price Reduction Initiative is set to begin Monday, with discounts on more than 1,660 product codes at supermarkets, as the government seeks to support households and contain the cost of essential goods.

The initiative currently includes more than 90 suppliers, 12 supermarket chains and three chains selling toys and school supplies. Participation remains open to additional businesses, and the list of products is expected to expand further before Monday.

The participating products include basic food items, everyday household goods, school supplies, private-label products and meat.

According to the latest available figures, about 900 branded products are included, with an average price reduction of 7% and individual discounts ranging from 5% to 30%.

More than 450 school-supply products have price reductions averaging about 10%, while 250 private-label products are being discounted by an average of 7%. Among 60 meat products, the average reduction is 7.2%. The category includes both Greek and imported meat, including beef.

Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos has described the initiative as a “national social agreement” aimed at supporting households, noting that reductions on basic food products start at 5% but are significantly higher in some cases.

Particular emphasis has been placed on branded products frequently purchased by Greek households, including branded pasta and other products with high purchase frequency.

Supermarkets will add further discounts

The final benefit for consumers is expected to exceed the average 7% reduction because supermarket chains will add their own discounts to those offered by suppliers.

The additional discount will vary between businesses, meaning the same product could have a different final price depending on the supermarket chain where it is sold.

How consumers can identify discounted products

Reduced prices will be marked on store shelves with special signage.

Starting Monday, consumers will also be able to access information digitally through the “PosoKanei” platform.

The platform will provide information on participating businesses, the products included in the initiative and the corresponding price reductions. For branded products, it will also show the range of the discount, taking into account the different additional reductions offered by individual supermarket chains.

Discounts will last two to four months

The duration of participation varies depending on the business and product, ranging from two to four months.

For businesses participating for two months, it has been agreed that new product codes will be added during the following two-month period. Some products are already committed to the initiative for four months.

The exact proportion represented by the 1,660 participating products among all products sold in supermarkets will be calculated next week. The current estimate is that, in a medium-sized supermarket, about one in nine products has so far been included.

The significance of the initiative, however, is not determined solely by the number of products involved but also by which products are included, as many are part of households’ everyday shopping baskets.

Price checks continue

Authorities are continuing to monitor prices across the market.

Theodorikakos has stressed that efforts to tackle high prices are continuing and that “we are not celebrating and we are not becoming complacent,” as international developments and geopolitical tensions continue to create uncertainty and pressure on prices.

According to Eurostat data cited by the minister, food prices fell 2.3% from June to July, while annual food inflation stood at -0.4%.

Full details on all products participating in the National Price Reduction Initiative, along with an estimate of the total potential financial benefit for households, are expected to be presented Monday.
