The Hellenic Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) coordinated the rescue of 352 migrants off the coast of Crete on Wednesday, 30 nautical miles south of Gavdos.
A Frontex ship first spotted the group, which was seen traveling in an old wooden fishing vessel.
According to initial reports on SKAI, the rescue operation involved a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel and four nearby commercial ships that assisted with the rescue and transfer of those on board.
The rescued individuals have been brought to the port of Palaiochora in Chania, where they received medical assistance and will be registered with the local authorities.
The summertime is traditionally a period where migrant arrivals by sea increase, aided by the fairer weather.
Although the central Mediterranean route to Italy remains the most “popular” among migrants with their sights on Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean sea route is increasingly frequented this time of the year, with sea off the coast of Crete an irregular migration “hot spot.”
