Greek authorities are preparing to issue fines to around 450,000 drivers after nationwide checks uncovered a wide range of vehicle-related violations.

The inspections revealed 300,000 uninsured vehicles, 150,000 cars without a valid roadworthiness inspection (KTEO), and 90,000 cases of unpaid circulation fees. In total, 350,000 vehicle owners were found to be in breach of regulations.

Sandra Gerangelou, a tax consultant speaking to Greek broadcaster MEGA, explained that cross-checks were carried out using data from both public and private bodies, including insurance companies, technical inspection centers, and the Ministry of Transport.

“Within the next few days, 450,000 drivers will receive notifications from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) to settle their outstanding obligations,” she said.

The fines at stake:

  • €250 to €1,000 for uninsured vehicles
  • €400 for failing to pass a technical inspection (KTEO)

Drivers will be granted a three-month grace period to address these issues. After this deadline, a second round of checks will be conducted. Those who remain non-compliant risk facing heavy financial penalties.
