Starting June 16, Greece will offer free home delivery of high-cost medicines through its national health insurance provider, EOPYY—a first for any social insurance provider in Europe.

The service is expected to benefit around 139,000 patients, including those with chronic illnesses and cancer, who currently rely on EOPYY pharmacies for their medications. More than 120,000 patients visit these pharmacies each month.

EOPYY President Theano Karpodini hailed the initiative as a milestone in patient care, stating: “We are proud that, as a modern and efficient organization, we consistently focus on providing the best possible service. Being the first in Europe to offer free home delivery of high-cost medicines makes us proud—and also increases our responsibilities and the expectations placed upon us.”

Patients can now opt to have their medications—including those requiring refrigeration—delivered to their home, office, or summer residence within 24 to 48 hours, depending on location. The service is entirely free of charge.

Prescriptions are reviewed by pharmacists, and deliveries are handled by certified logistics providers following strict protocols for data protection, traceability, and cold-chain safety.

Applications are submitted via EOPYY’s online platform (eopyy.gov.gr), with support available at pharmacies, service centers, and the call center at 18181. Patients need only an electronic prescription and, when required, a paperless medical referral.
