Greece Weather Heat Persists as Strong Aegean Winds Blow

Sunny weather, seasonally high temperatures, and strong northerly winds are expected across Greece through Thursday, with only isolated showers forecast in mountainous northern areas.

Greece is expected to experience several more days of typical summer weather, with abundant sunshine, seasonally high temperatures, and strong northerly winds, particularly across the Aegean Sea.

Temperatures will remain high but within normal seasonal levels, with the warmest conditions expected over the mainland. At the same time, persistent northerly “meltemi” winds—a dry, seasonal wind common in the Aegean during summer—will continue to blow at 6 to 7 Beaufort in some areas, helping keep temperatures lower across many islands.

Tuesday, August 4

Tuesday’s forecast calls for generally sunny skies across most of the country. During the afternoon and evening, temporary cloud development is expected over the mainland, especially in mountainous areas, where Epirus and Macedonia could see brief, isolated showers.

Winds will blow from the north at 2 to 4 Beaufort, locally reaching 5 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea, and 3 to 5 Beaufort in the Aegean, strengthening locally to 6 or 7 Beaufort.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, reaching 34-36°C (93-97°F) across the Ionian Islands and mainland Greece, with isolated inland areas climbing to 37°C (99°F). Elsewhere across the islands, highs will range between 30°C and 34°C (86-93°F), while parts of the Dodecanese and southern Crete may reach 35-36°C (95-97°F).

Athens and Thessaloniki

Athens is expected to remain sunny throughout the day, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 36°C (73-97°F). Eastern and northern parts of the Attica region are forecast to be 2 to 3 degrees cooler. Northerly winds will blow at 3 to 5 Beaufort, reaching 6 Beaufort in eastern areas.

Thessaloniki will also see mostly sunny weather, although temporary afternoon clouds may develop over the surrounding mountains, where brief light showers are possible. Temperatures are expected to range from 22°C to 35°C (72-95°F), with light and variable winds of 2 to 4 Beaufort.

Outlook Through Thursday

Weather conditions are expected to remain stable on Wednesday, with widespread sunshine and only limited afternoon cloud development over mountainous inland areas.

Northerly winds will continue at 2 to 4 Beaufort in the Ionian and 3 to 5 Beaufort in the Aegean, locally reaching 6 to 7 Beaufort.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, reaching 34-36°C (93-97°F) across most regions, with isolated areas climbing to 37°C (99°F). Western mainland Greece could locally reach 38°C (100°F).

On Thursday, sunny conditions will continue across most of the country. Morning clouds are expected over the Ionian Sea, while afternoon cloud development over much of the mainland may trigger isolated showers in mountainous areas. Northwestern Greece could also experience isolated thunderstorms.

Winds will remain from the north at 2 to 4 Beaufort, locally 5 Beaufort in the Ionian, and 3 to 5 Beaufort in the Aegean, strengthening locally to 6 or 7 Beaufort.
