Health experts in Greece are advising vulnerable groups to take precautions as dust storms, high temperatures and humidity are expected to affect air quality and create stifling conditions in the coming days.
According to the National Meteorological Service, temperatures will continue to rise through Sunday, reaching 25°C (77F) in Athens and up to 30°C (86F) on Crete, accompanied by clouds, high concentrations of dust and increased humidity.
In response to the forecasts, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) issued guidance on Wednesday, particularly for individuals with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as for seniors.
Weather Forecast and Conditions
- Thursday, March 13: Scattered clouds with southerly winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort in the northern Aegean. Temperatures at noon will range from 20 to 23°C in most areas, with slightly higher readings (24-26°C) in the south of the country.
- Friday, March 14: Scattered clouds with limited visibility, especially in the morning. Southerly winds up to 6 Beaufort, with temperatures rising to 27°C in the southern regions.
- Next week: Temperatures are expected to drop by as much as 10°C in some areas.
Health Advice and Protective Measures
EODY experts strongly advise limiting outdoor activities or unnecessary travel when dust levels are high. Additionally, they recommend using high-protection masks (FFP2/KN95/N95) in conditions of elevated dust concentrations to reduce particle inhalation.
