Greek Soccer Mourns Marios Oikonomou, Dead at 33

Former Greek international defender Marios Oikonomou has died at the age of 33 after sustaining critical injuries in a motorcycle accident in Ioannina

Greek soccer was plunged into mourning by the death of Marios Oikonomou, who passed away at the age of 33.

The former Greek international defender had been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Ioannina in recent days, following a serious motorcycle accident. Medical staff worked to stabilize his condition, but his health continued to deteriorate and he did not survive. The accident occurred in Ioannina when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car.

The Ioannina-born defender began his career at PAS Giannina before going on to play for a number of clubs in Greece and abroad, wearing the jerseys of Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari, AEK Athens, Copenhagen, Sampdoria, and Panetolikos. He retired from professional football in 2024, having earned six caps for the Greek national team and having won the Danish league title in 2022.
