A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon in a crash on the Attiki Odos ring road in northeast Athens, while a separate traffic accident on Crete’s main northern provincial highway caused injuries and major congestion.

According to initial reports, the motorcyclist died after colliding with a police vehicle that was conducting checks in the emergency lane before crashing into a truck near the Anthousa toll station. The circumstances surrounding the collision were not immediately clear.

In a separate incident shortly before 2 p.m., a passenger vehicle veered off course and overturned on the northern road axis of Crete (VOAK) near Kakos Oros, outside Heraklion, according to local media reports.

Emergency responders transported the lightly injured driver to a nearby hospital for medical examinations. Authorities said traffic on the busy highway was heavily disrupted until the overturned vehicle was removed and circulation restored.

The two incidents come amid mounting concern over traffic fatalities and serious road accidents in Greece. Over the past week a series of deadly crashes across the country, including fatal collisions involving young drivers and motorcyclists, as well as renewed calls by road safety experts for stricter enforcement and infrastructure improvements.
