A central road in the village of Chostia, part of the Municipality of Thebes in central Greece, will be closed for three hours every evening to allow children to play safely outdoors.
The decision was taken by community president Serafeim Dedes, who said the measure was introduced because the village still does not have a playground, despite plans for one dating back to 2017.
“The village does not have a playground. One has been planned since 2017, but it has not been implemented to this day due to bureaucratic reasons,” Dedes said, according to comments reported by Greek media.
Road closed from 9:30 pm to midnight
Dedes explained that the community council had previously decided to make a road one-way, but the municipal authorities did not proceed with the change.
He later submitted a request for the central road to be closed every evening from 9:30 pm until midnight, when children typically gather outside to ride bicycles and play with balls.
The measure has already been put into practice, with Dedes emphasizing that the decision was not political but focused solely on children’s safety.
“The issue is not political. The issue is children’s safety. Above all, it is about the safety of the children,” he said.
