Students from Piraeus traveled to the remote Greek island of Agathonisi on Wednesday to take part in the annual October 28 national holiday parade alongside the island’s small student population.

The visit was organized as part of a long-standing twinning partnership involving Agathonisi’s primary school and students from the 14th Junior High School of Piraeus, a port city near Athens. Thirteen visiting students made the journey to participate in the celebrations with their local peers.

Speaking to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, Vangelis Tsamourtzis, head of Agathonisi’s high school, described the visit as particularly moving and an important part of the island’s national holiday events.

The initiative gave the students an opportunity to share experiences, knowledge and details of their everyday lives, he said, describing the exchange as a “window to the world” for children growing up on the island.

Agathonisi’s school has just seven students, including one enrolled in high school, and five teachers. Both students and educators welcomed the visiting group and expressed hope that the initiative would continue in the years ahead.

The October 28 holiday commemorates Greece’s refusal to accept an ultimatum from Fascist Italy in 1940, an event that marked the country’s entry into World War II.
