At least 10 people were killed Wednesday in a collision between two high-speed trains in Spain, according to a regional government source. The crash brought traffic on the Madrid-to-Andalusia rail corridor to a standstill as emergency crews responded to the scene.

The accident took place shortly after 9 a.m. local time on the line between Madrid and Seville. A Renfe train and an Iryo train were involved, with two carriages on the Iryo train leaving the tracks, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government said.

The number of injured passengers and the cause of the collision had not yet been established.

Railway infrastructure operator Adif confirmed that services on the route had been suspended after the trains collided from behind.

Wreckage scattered below elevated tracks

Television footage from Castilla-La Mancha showed a derailed carriage still positioned on an elevated stretch of railway, while damaged panels, twisted metal and other debris lay on the slope beneath it.

Local authorities were preparing additional space for people affected by the crash. Manuel Galan, mayor of Urda, a town near the scene, told Spanish radio station Cadena SER that emergency services had asked the council to make facilities available for passengers and injured people, including a sports hall.

As reported in Reuters, the incident also led to the cancellation of political engagements in the capital. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s schedule for Wednesday was cleared, according to the government’s published agenda, while the opposition People’s Party suspended all its campaign events, a spokesperson said.

Crash follows January disaster on the same line

The latest accident has occurred less than a year after a separate high-speed rail disaster involving the same operators on the same route.

In January, 46 people died near Adamuz in Cordoba province when a derailed train struck an approaching train. The accident prompted public debate over whether investment in railway maintenance had been sufficient in recent years.

Wednesday’s collision once again interrupted high-speed connections between Madrid and southern Spain. Adif said the route would remain suspended following the crash.
