A 53-year-old Israeli woman was found dead Sunday afternoon in her room at a central hotel in Athens, prompting a police investigation and a forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The woman was discovered unresponsive in a fifth-floor room at a hotel in the downtown Syntagma Square area. According to available information, she had been staying at the hotel since Feb. 4.
Initial information suggests the death may be a suicide. Reports said the woman had bruises on her neck and lower limbs, and multiple pills were found in the room. A medical examiner has been called to the scene, and an autopsy has been ordered to clarify the cause of death.
Her brother found her after trying for hours to reach her by phone without success, authorities said.
Law enforcement officials are examining all possibilities. Police are collecting footage from security cameras and taking statements from hotel staff as part of the ongoing preliminary investigation.
