A Greek court has granted the conditional release of James Dalamangas while he awaits a ruling on whether he will be extradited to Australia to face murder charges linked to a decades-old case.

According to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, the 56-year-old Greek-Australian will be released from Agios Stefanos Prison under strict conditions, including a ban on leaving the country and a requirement to report to a police station every 15 days.

The decision follows a request to lift his detention ahead of a hearing before the Patras Court of Appeal Council, which will determine whether he should be extradited to Australia, as requested by Australian authorities.

Dalamangas has been among Australia’s most wanted fugitives for years over his involvement in the 1999 killing of fellow Greek-Australian George Giannopoulos in Sydney.
