Kefalonia Death: 23-Year-Old Suspect Breaks Silence

From prison, the accused recounts the final hours of 19-year-old Myrto, detailing drugs, money transfers and the chaotic moments before her collapse—claims that now shape a case gripping Greece.

The 23-year-old man accused in the death of 19-year-old Myrto on Kefalonia has spoken publicly for the first time, offering his version of the events that unfolded on the night she died. Speaking through his lawyer on TV, he described the sequence of events that led to the young woman’s collapse—claims that are now under intense scrutiny by authorities.

All three suspects in the case have been remanded in custody at Korydallos Prison, Greece’s largest correctional facility, following marathon depositions. They face charges of homicide by omission—a legal concept in Greek law referring to a failure to act to prevent a death.

According to the 23-year-old, his acquaintance with Myrto began just over a month earlier. “In recent years I lived in Ilioupoli, Athens, where I studied hairdressing. I would return to Kefalonia every summer to work seasonal jobs. Last year I worked in a taverna. I met Myrto about a month and a half ago at a wedding on the island. Since then we became friends, and when I came back for Easter, we went out two or three times for coffee,” he said.

He claims that on the night in question, Myrto had spent several hours with a man he identifies as Albanian, before being dropped off at a café shortly before midnight. “She then contacted the 66-year-old man, telling him she hadn’t eaten or slept for two days, that she was sleeping on benches, and asked him for money. She had told me they had been intimate in the past and had even planned to go on vacation together,” he alleged.

The 23-year-old also stated that he submitted a USB drive to the prosecutor containing what he described as material documenting Myrto’s life from 2021 to today, including appearances on the subscription platform OnlyFans. “That night we bought vodka and soft drinks and went to the room. I dressed as a woman—with a skirt, bra, thong, hair extensions and eyelashes. We planned to call the 66-year-old so he could watch us in intimate moments,” he claimed.

According to his account, Myrto later asked for drugs. “I told her I had a contact. I called a weightlifter, another suspect in the case, who brought the first dose. From the €220 the 66-year-old had sent her via IRIS (a Greek instant payment system), she used €50 to pay for the hotel and €80 for a second dose of cocaine, which she requested and paid for herself,” he said.

He insisted that he personally used drugs only once that night and began to feel unwell. “I only took from the first dose. I already felt sick and went out onto the balcony for air. When I came back inside, Myrto was having seizures,” he said, adding that the bag he was seen carrying in video footage contained his personal belongings, including the clothing and accessories he had worn.

In a further claim, he said that when the weightlifter, another suspect in the case, arrived with the drugs, Myrto—who at that point had not yet used any substances—proposed having sex with him. “However, the weightlifter did not want me present, as he feared I might become involved, which he did not want,” he stated.

He also described the presence of others in the same hotel. “In another room was the Albanian suspect with his girlfriend, and on another floor her father with his partner. The weightlifter called the Albanian to help move Myrto. They left her on a bench below the hotel. I called emergency services, but the weightlifter spoke because I didn’t know the address. We did not abandon Myrto,” he said.
