Three men accused in the death of a 19-year-old Myrto on Kefalonia were being transferred under heavy guard early Saturday to Korydallos Prison, after a court ordered their pretrial detention and upgraded the charges against them.
The suspects, 22, 23 and 26, were moved by ferry from Argostoli following hours of testimony before a judge and prosecutor.
They now face a felony charge of homicide by omission — a case built on allegations they left the young woman alone in a vulnerable state instead of seeking help.
The 19-year-old was found dead early Tuesday near Argostoli’s central square. She had been with the three men shortly beforehand, according to investigators. Initial forensic findings showed no visible injuries, shifting the focus to whether their failure to act proved fatal.
Tensions flared outside the Kefalonia courthouse during the proceedings, where a crowd gathered and shouted at the suspects. Police removed them through a rear exit late Friday to avoid clashes.
The investigation is now widening.
Authorities are examining the role of a 66-year-old man from Preveza, who has emerged as a key witness. He told investigators he had been in contact with the victim and sent her €220 via the IRIS payment system on the night she died, after she said she had nowhere to stay. He has provided proof of the transfer.
Forensic teams are reviewing phone records, messages and financial data in an effort to reconstruct her final hours and determine whether others were involved.
Myrto was buried Friday in Argostoli, in a service marked by grief. Her mother delivered an emotional farewell, while a wreath from her grandfather reading “Farewell, my little angel” underscored the impact of her death on the local community.
