Two trains, travelling in opposite directions, on Thursday remained in place for roughly 15 minutes and with the doors unable to open near a station in Thessaloniki’s newly opened metro line, the latest mishap at the long-awaited underground in Greece’s second-largest metropolis.
The trains remained at a standstill at the system’s Panepistimio station. Some passengers managed to open carriage doors and exit by foot to reach the station’s concourse.
The line’s operation was soon restored.
Similar mishaps have been recorded since the Nov. 30, 2024, inauguration of the Thessaloniki metro, which employs remote-controlled trains.
Constructing and finally inaugurating the nearly 10-kilometer metro line capped off decades of efforts to operate an underground rail service for the city.
