A 35-year-old Bulgarian man has been arrested in Thessaloniki on suspicion of espionage after authorities discovered drone footage showing a former military facility in the city’s wider area.

The case came to light after a citizen reported that a man was flying a remote-controlled unmanned aircraft (drone) over a residential area in eastern Thessaloniki.

Police officers from the DIAS motorcycle unit located the man and, during a check, found that he did not have the required drone operator license. The drone was found inside his vehicle and was seized by authorities.

An examination of the material stored on the device revealed a thermal image of the facilities of the former Farmakis military camp in Kalamaria, Thessaloniki.

Authorities filed a case against the arrested man, who is expected to appear before the relevant prosecutor for further proceedings.
