Just hours after an operation to remove umbrellas and sun loungers from a public section of beach in Gerakini, Halkidiki, some people returned and reinstalled their equipment, prompting reactions.

On Tuesday morning, the Municipality of Polygyros in Halkidiki launched an operation to clear public space on Gerakini beach. Municipal crews, joined by Deputy Mayor Vasilis Fardogiannis, removed permanently anchored umbrellas and sun loungers that were occupying the shoreline and restricting beachgoers’ free access.

The operation involved a truck, two pickup trucks and an excavator. A total of 100 umbrellas and sun loungers were removed after they had been permanently installed, anchored and locked in place on Gerakini beach.

The municipality had previously issued a notice calling on residents and vacationers to remove any equipment that had been left permanently on the seashore and beach. Despite the appeal, several people failed to comply, prompting municipal crews to remove the equipment themselves.

Deputy Mayor Vasilis Fardogiannis stressed that the operation was not intended as a confrontation.

“This is not a move aimed at confronting anyone. It is a necessary intervention to protect public space and enforce rules that apply to everyone. The municipality will continue inspections and interventions wherever necessary, with the aim of keeping beaches clean, open and accessible to residents and visitors,” he said.

According to the Public Property Service, the umbrellas and sun loungers that were removed are treated as waste and were taken to a recycling facility.
