A 44-year-old man who brutally assaulted a doctor inside a public hospital in the town of Aigio was found dead at his home two days after the attack.
The incident began on the evening of Friday, December 12, when the man, who had sought treatment for a leg issue, allegedly attacked an orthopedic doctor inside the hospital. According to reports, the patient punched the physician repeatedly in the face and body, causing serious injuries.
On Sunday, relatives found the man unconscious in his home and called emergency services. He was transported back to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The cause of death remains unclear, and a forensic examination has been ordered to determine the circumstances.
The development was publicly disclosed by the head of Greece’s public hospital workers’ federation, who said the man had no known serious medical conditions beyond the leg problem for which he initially sought care.
Following the man’s death, tensions escalated at the hospital. Relatives reportedly accused medical staff of failing to properly care for him and issued threats against hospital personnel. Hospital officials requested immediate police presence, while prosecutors have also been asked to intervene.
The assaulted doctor, who required stitches and suffered injuries to his head, nose, and eyebrow, said he had never met the patient before and that no prior argument had taken place.
“He thought I was going to hit him just because I stood up from my desk,” the doctor said in a televised interview. “I told him I had done nothing to him, but he kept hitting me. He said he didn’t like the way I was looking at him.”
According to the doctor, the beating lasted nearly half an hour.
The patient was described as a boxer and fitness trainer and was known to law enforcement due to past criminal activity, including a previous prison sentence.
