A memorial service will be held Saturday in Halkidiki, northern Greece, to honor a Moldovan family killed in a devastating traffic accident.
The service will take place at 5 p.m. at the site of the crash on the provincial road connecting Nea Moudania and Sithonia, near Metamorfosi.
A small chapel has already been erected at the site, where a priest from the Holy Metropolis of Kassandria will conduct the memorial service in memory of the three victims: the 35-year-old father, his 28-year-old wife and their six-month-old baby.
The family was killed in a violent collision with a tanker truck while on vacation in Greece.
Daughter continues recovery in Moldova
The couple’s 7-year-old daughter, Patricia, was seriously injured in the crash and was initially transferred to hospitals in Thessaloniki.
Last Friday, the girl left Greece by ambulance for Moldova, where she will continue her lengthy rehabilitation. She remains hospitalized.
George Palazis, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in Thessaloniki, said the memorial was a symbolic initiative he had promised the victims’ relatives.
“The chapel is already ready for the memorial service. I was deeply moved when I went to the site of the tragedy. There, I also found a doll lying nearby, probably belonging to 7-year-old Patricia,” Palazis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
He also recalled a tragic coincidence involving the aunt who has taken custody of Patricia. Her birthday is July 15, the same day the crash occurred. According to Palazis, the family had wished her a happy birthday shortly before the fatal collision.
A tribute to the victims
Palazis described the memorial service as a small but meaningful tribute to the victims and a symbolic connection between the Greek and Moldovan peoples.
The service will take place at the location where the family lost three of its members, 40 days after their deaths.
