Municipal authorities are hoping to streamline tourist bus parking in central Athens, and reduce traffic congestion through a new digital management platform unveiled this week.
As part of ongoing efforts to address the long-standing challenge of tour bus parking in the Greek capital, the municipality has developed Athens Bus Parking, a digital tool designed to improve the management and organization of parking spaces for tourist buses across the city.
Developed by the municipality’s IT company, DAEM, the platform enables tour bus operators to plan parking more efficiently and make better use of available spaces. Officials say the initiative will help ease congestion in the city center, particularly during peak tourism periods.
The application was presented at a meeting held at DAEM headquarters, attended by representatives of the Municipality of Athens and the Panhellenic Federation of Tourism Enterprises (GEPOET).
The initiative aims to map and optimize available parking areas for tourist buses while strengthening cooperation between local authorities and tourism professionals. Its broader goal is to establish a comprehensive management framework that supports sustainable urban mobility and the smooth operation of the city.
During the summer months, tourist buses transporting visitors to Athens’ major attractions often contribute to significant traffic congestion, particularly in the city center, where long-term parking infrastructure remains limited. Deputy Mayor for Municipal Police and Public Spaces, Eleni Zontirou, said the project is expected to improve residents’ quality of life while enhancing the visitor experience.
GEPOET President Aris Marinis welcomed the collaboration and expressed optimism that technology-driven solutions could finally help resolve the long-standing issue of tourist bus parking in central Athens.
