New details have emerged in the investigation into the death of a 19-year-old woman on the Greek island of Kefalonia, as authorities examine the circumstances leading up to her collapse in the central square of Argostoli.
Police are now investigating whether drug use may have preceded the incident. Three young men who were with the woman that night have been arrested and charged with exposing her to danger after allegedly abandoning her while she was in a semi-conscious state.
According to investigators, the group had been staying at a local hotel shortly before the incident. One of the suspects, a 23-year-old who later turned himself in, told authorities that he and the others—a 26-year-old former athlete and a 22-year-old of Albanian origin—used cocaine in a hotel room rented by one of them.
Security footage from the hotel, already handed over to police, reportedly shows individuals entering and leaving the room multiple times. Around 4:30 a.m., the 19-year-old is seen being removed from the premises in a fainted condition. About 45 minutes later, the individual who had checked into the room also left.
The young woman had gone out earlier for entertainment but was later found in critical condition in the town square. Emergency services were initially dispatched to another incident before being redirected to the location where she was found lying on the ground, still conscious at the time.
She was rushed to the island’s hospital, where she later died despite efforts by doctors.
The victim’s family has been left devastated, with her father expressing disbelief over the sudden loss. He described his daughter as healthy, a non-drinker and with great potential and said he could not understand how events unfolded that night.
The exact cause of death will be determined by a forensic examination, while authorities continue to analyze video evidence and testimonies to clarify the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved.
The hotel owner has stated that the business is fully cooperating with investigators and has provided all available material to assist the inquiry.
