New footage from surveillance video has emerged to shed further light on the mysterious death of a 30-year-old woman in central Athens who fell three storeys to her death in the early hours of Friday, with authorities now leaning away from the possibility of criminal involvement.
A 45-year-old Italian man origin was taken in for questioning in connection with the fatality, as he had reportedly been with the woman earlier in a short-term lease apartment in the same building after the two arranged to meet via a dating app.
The woman, according to reports an Ethiopian national, was found dead in the alley of the apartment building.
An eyewitness told MEGA television that they were awakened by screams:
“At 4:20 a.m. I woke up from shouting outside on Kolokotroni Street. Around 4:30 a.m., the screams moved inside the building, outside my apartment on the third floor.”
Residents reported an ongoing disturbance and alerted authorities. Police officers arrived at the scene, discovered blood traces in the hallway and detained the man, who reportedly had scratches on his face, similar to the victim.
He was taken to the police station for questioning and admitted only to a dispute, reports state.
“I had consumed alcohol and did not know her details. We had sexual intercourse; we met through a dating app,” he reportedly told police.
New footage
According to police sources, newly obtained video footage appears to initially rule out a criminal act.
The footage reportedly shows the woman outside the third-floor apartment, then ascending the stairs to the fourth floor, from where she fell to her death. At the same time, the 45-year-old man is seen remaining inside the third-floor apartment.
Authorities are now focusing on what exactly occurred inside the apartment that led the woman to leave, cause a disturbance and ultimately fall to her death under tragic circumstances.
