Nine beaches on the Greek islands of Paros and Chios have lost their Blue Flag designation for the 2026 swimming season after failing to meet the program’s strict standards or because they were not properly organized this year.
According to the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the affected beaches are:
- Livadia Beach, Municipality of Paros
- Logaras Beach, Municipality of Paros
- Marpissa/Golden Beach, Municipality of Paros
- Pounda Beach, Municipality of Paros
- Agios Isidoros Beach, Municipality of Chios
- Agia Paraskevi Beach, Municipality of Chios
- Giosonas Beach, Municipality of Chios
- Daskalopetra Beach, Municipality of Chios
- Kontari Beach, Municipality of Chios
Inspections Found Organizational Shortcomings
The organization said inspections identified deficiencies in several areas, including services provided to beachgoers and visitors, including accessibility for people with disabilities, swimmer and visitor safety, cleanliness, and the provision of accurate information.
The National Crisis Committee and the program’s Coordinating Committee decided to withdraw the awards in order to preserve the credibility and integrity of the Blue Flag program.
More Inspections Underway
Authorities said inspections of all Blue Flag beaches across Greece are continuing, with most visits conducted without prior notice.
If additional beaches are found not to comply with the program’s criteria, further Blue Flag withdrawals will be announced in future statements.
Officials stressed that the removal of Blue Flag status is related to inadequate organization and management, not water quality. According to the program’s standards, the bathing water at the affected beaches continues to be rated as excellent.
