Authorities have launched an investigation into the death of a 28-year-old pregnant woman at the public hospital of Arta in northwestern Greece.
The woman, who was in the second month of her pregnancy and the mother of a two-year-old child, was admitted to the hospital’s Obstetrics Department on Sunday with severe abdominal pain. She was administered antibiotics but soon suffered a sudden deterioration in her condition. According to local media reports, she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where doctors attempted to save her life, but she died shortly afterwards.
Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers, told Live News on MEGA Channel that the woman suffered multiple organ failure and cardiac arrest following an apparent allergic reaction.
“She was admitted to the maternity clinic on Sunday night and was scheduled for surgery the next day. She was given antibiotics, went into allergic shock, and was moved to the surgical recovery unit because there was no available ICU bed,” Giannakos said.
Asked whether doctors had performed allergy testing beforehand, Giannakos noted that it is not always possible in hospital settings. “Doctors typically rely on patients to inform them of any known allergies,” he explained.
The hospital administration has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
