Greece will see a shift toward more autumn-like weather on Wednesday, September 16, with increased cloud cover, local rain and thunderstorms affecting several parts of the country.
The most intense conditions are expected in southern areas, while temperatures will remain generally within normal levels for the time of year.
Where rain and storms are expected
From the early morning hours, rain and thunderstorms will develop in parts of western and southern Greece, including the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western Greece, the southern Peloponnese and Crete.
The weather will be particularly unsettled in the southern Peloponnese, Kythira and Crete, where rain, showers and strong thunderstorms are expected at times.
Light to moderate rain is also forecast in the western Peloponnese and the Cyclades, while the Dodecanese may see scattered showers through the evening.
The rain and storms will later extend to the Cyclades and Dodecanese, while there is also a significant possibility of local rain in parts of Thessaly and Central Greece.
Hail is possible in Crete, particularly during the morning hours. The weather is expected to improve during the evening.
Temperatures across Greece
Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach:
- Western Macedonia: 11 to 24 C
- Macedonia and Thrace: 12 to 29 C
- Epirus: 11 to 30 C
- Thessaly: 12 to 28 C
- Central mainland Greece: 11 to 29 C
- Peloponnese: 12 to 29 C
- Crete: 14 to 31 C
- Ionian Islands: 16 to 27 C
- Northern and northeastern Aegean islands: 17 to 26 C
- Other Aegean islands: 19 to 29 C
The forecast from meteorologist Giannis Kallianos similarly calls for local rain in the western Peloponnese, Cyclades and Dodecanese, with heavier showers and thunderstorms possible in the southern Peloponnese, Kythira and Crete.
Strong winds and dust
Winds in the Aegean Sea will blow from north to northeast at 4 to 5 Beaufort.
In the Dodecanese, winds will be lighter, at 2 to 3 Beaufort and locally up to 4 Beaufort, from north to northwest directions.
Winds in the Ionian Sea will initially be light and mainly easterly before shifting to northerly to northwesterly directions.
The forecast also calls for Saharan dust in the atmosphere over western Greece, Crete, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese.
Athens and Thessaloniki
In Attica, clouds are expected to increase at times during the day, with northerly winds of 3 to 4 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 17 to 28 C.
In Thessaloniki, clouds will be present from the morning, with a chance of light rain around midday. Winds will be light at 2 to 3 Beaufort, mainly from southerly directions, while temperatures will range from 15 to 28 C.
