Greek authorities have arrested a retired officer of the Hellenic Air Force following a large-scale raid at his residence in Kiato, a town in southern Greece. The operation, conducted by the Organized Crime Division, uncovered an enormous illegal arsenal, marking a significant breakthrough in the country’s ongoing fight against illicit arms trafficking.

Extensive Weapons Cache Discovered

Police seized a staggering 174 firearms, including pistols, revolvers, assault rifles, machine guns, carbines, and sniper rifles. The cache also included over 15,500 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, alongside a wide array of weapon components:

  • 156 barrels
  • 350 magazines
  • 110 foregrips
  • 50 stocks
  • 45 handles
  • 80 holsters
  • 6 silencers

Additionally, the arsenal contained a collection of edged weapons such as knives, katana swords, yataghans, and 30 bayonets.

Suspected Arms Trafficking Network

The retired officer’s wife was also detained as police investigate their potential involvement in a larger illegal arms operation. Initial reports indicate possible connections to a known arms dealer, with suspicions that the weapons might have been destined for resale or trafficking within organized criminal networks.

Sources close to the inquiry revealed that the suspect was allegedly engaged in reloading ammunition, a process strictly controlled under Greek law. Authorities are currently examining whether this activity was part of a broader illicit enterprise.

Ongoing Investigation and Security Concerns

The extensive and professionally maintained nature of the weapons cache has raised serious concerns about public safety and national security. While no direct links to terrorism or criminal organizations have yet been confirmed, police continue to search for additional evidence and possible collaborators.

The couple is expected to face multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms, ammunition trafficking, and violations related to national security legislation.
