Family members and friends are set to bid a final farewell today to a 57-year-old woman and her 26-year-old daughter who were killed in a traffic accident on the Greek island of Rhodes on Sunday.

The funeral service took place at 11 a.m. local time at a church in Rhodes, as the community mourns the loss of the two women.

The 44-year-old driver involved in the crash has been charged with a felony-level offense by prosecutors.

The suspect does not deny that he was driving above the speed limit at the location. However, he claims that the victims’ vehicle crossed a red traffic light while attempting to make a U-turn, leaving him unable to avoid the collision. Investigators are expected to examine these claims as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Traffic police are working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash. Investigators are seeking to determine the exact speed of the vehicles, their positions and directions of travel at the time of impact, and whether the traffic lights at the intersection were functioning properly.

Witness testimony has added further complexity to the case. Some eyewitnesses told local media that the 44-year-old driver was traveling at excessive speed and crossed a red light shortly before the collision. Others have also suggested the vehicle was moving significantly faster than the legal limit.

According to assessments, the car may have been moving at around 140 km/h in an area where the speed limit is 60 km/h. Additional video footage reviewed by local media reportedly does not show the traffic light itself.

At the same time, reports indicate that authorities are examining the possibility of a malfunction in the traffic signals at the intersection, an issue that could prove critical in determining responsibility for the crash.

The wife of the 44 year-old, who was in the car at the time of the accident along with their 17 year old son, said she remains in shock following the accident. While recovering from injuries to her chest and neck, she said the emotional impact of the tragedy has been overwhelming.
