Greece’s Samaria Gorge will be closed to visitors from both entrances on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, due to forecasts of severe weather, the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency announced.
The decision follows an updated forecast from Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY), which calls for heavy rainfall and/or thunderstorms in the areas surrounding the gorge.
Rainfall of up to 10.5 millimeters is forecast for Xyloskalo, at the gorge’s northern entrance, while up to 8 millimeters is expected in Agia Roumeli, at its southern end.
According to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, the forecast amounts exceed the thresholds approved by the Chania Regional Government for the gorge to remain open.
As a result, Samaria Gorge will remain closed to visitors on Tuesday at both entrances.
