The mayor of the Greek island of Samothrace says a 22-year-old tourist who suffered severe burns in an accident at the island’s thermal springs is not in life-threatening condition, as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement posted on social media, Mayor Athanasios Vitsas said he had received an update on the young man’s condition after the victim was transferred to a hospital in Thessaloniki for treatment.
“His life is not in danger,” Vitsas said, adding that the injured tourist will remain hospitalized for as long as necessary to complete his recovery.
The mayor also expressed his wishes for the young man’s speedy recovery.
Regarding the circumstances of the accident, Vitsas said they are being investigated by the competent authorities.
“The Municipality of Samothrace has been in full cooperation with the authorities from the very beginning, providing all necessary information that may contribute to the investigation of the case,” he said.
Following the incident, the mayor also urged both residents and visitors to follow posted safety signs, avoid entering areas where work is being carried out, and exercise appropriate caution to protect their personal safety.
