The 2026 summer sales period comes to a close on Monday, August 31, giving shoppers a final window to take advantage of discounted prices before the season wraps up. The sales began on July 13 and have run for nearly seven weeks.

What the law requires on discount signs

Any announcement of a price reduction must be accompanied by what Greek consumer law calls the reference price, the lowest price at which the same product was sold in the 30 days before the sale began. Retailers cannot simply mark up a price shortly before the sales period and then advertise a steep discount from that inflated figure.

Stores are allowed to present the reduction in different ways, as long as the earlier price is displayed alongside it. A shop might list an item as 20 percent off, mark it down by a flat amount such as 10 euros, or show both the old and new prices side by side, for example “Now 50 euros, Was 100 euros.” Shoppers who want to check whether a discount is genuine can compare the listed reference price against what they recall paying, or ask the retailer directly, since the reference price must be disclosed by law.

Sunday shopping dates later this year

Separately from the sales period, retail stores in Greece are normally closed on Sundays, with a limited number of exceptions permitted each year. Based on current scheduling, retailers are expected to be open on the following Sundays later in 2026.

  • November 29
  • December 13
  • December 20
  • December 27

The suggested hours for these Sunday openings run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., though the exact hours depend on decisions made by individual retailers and any updates to the relevant regulations closer to each date.

For shoppers in Greece, including tourists and members of the Greek diaspora visiting for the end of summer, the final days of the sales period offer one more chance to buy at reduced prices before the standard pricing returns in September, with the December Sundays offering another round of extended shopping hours ahead of the holidays.
