A 16-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a violent hit-and-run in Athens, where a scooter struck her and left her seriously injured in the street.

The teenager remains intubated in intensive care at KAT Hospital with severe head injuries, multiple fractures, and has undergone surgery to remove her spleen, according to medical reports.

Violent collision and abandonment

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon as the girl attempted to cross the street near the intersection in central Athens. She was heading toward a parcel pickup locker when a scooter hit her, throwing her approximately 30 meters.

Both riders fell after the impact but quickly got back on the scooter and fled the scene, leaving the girl bleeding on the road.

Passersby were able to record the vehicle’s license plate and called emergency services. Paramedics transported the injured teenager to the hospital.

Arrests and conflicting statements

A 20-year-old woman later came forward claiming ownership of the scooter, initially stating it had been stolen. However, police investigations revealed she was renting the vehicle to the 16-year-old driver for delivery work.

Authorities arrested the woman and another 20-year-old man accused of managing the arrangement, charging them with misleading authorities and providing false testimony.

The 16-year-old driver was later arrested, following testimony from a 22-year-old passenger who identified him. Upon arrest the driver mentioned that he was on his way to turn himself in, a statement which authorities are questioning.

The teenage driver, of Sudanese origin, was working insured as a delivery driver without a drivers license. He is set to face a prosecutor Monday as he faces charges related to the hit-and-run.

He has previously been accused of lewd behavior and selling drugs outside school campuses.
