The Thessaloniki Metro’s main line will be temporarily out of passenger service from May 29 to June 19, 2026, as authorities carry out final testing of new systems and train operations ahead of the extension toward Kalamaria.
The decision follows a coordination meeting involving the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and key transport agencies, including Elliniko Metro, OSETH, OASTH, and THEMA. The focus is on ensuring the safe integration of the new extension into the existing network.
During the suspension, public transport will be reinforced with an expanded bus plan to cover increased demand. Central to this is the return of the semi-express M1 bus line, running between Nea Elvetia and the New Railway Station along the city’s main transport axis. The route will be served by 16 articulated buses, operating every seven minutes from 5:00 a.m. to midnight.
The M1 will follow key central stops including Hippokration, AHEPA, Kamara, Agia Sofia, and Democracy Square, while return routes will include a temporary stop at Papafi. Additional services will also be added to bus lines 3, 31, and 39 to further ease congestion.
To support operations, Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (OASTH) will temporarily suspend staff leave for drivers and dispatchers throughout the period.
Officials describe the interruption as a necessary step for completing testing and ensuring the safe and full integration of the Kalamaria extension into Thessaloniki’s transport network.
