Two tourists were seriously injured after being thrown onto rocks by large waves generated by passing speedboats and fast-moving vessels off Paros, according to a complaint by a German visitor who was on the island.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 18, at Germanika Beach in the Gulf of Parikia, according to Jorg Alexander Schaller, a German tourist who lives in France and was visiting Paros.

Schaller said members of his family were struck by powerful waves created by passing speedboats. His son-in-law and mother were pushed onto the rocks and suffered serious injuries.

In a post to the Facebook group Save Paros, Schaller said that two vessels passed Germanika at very high speed, creating huge waves.

“The waves pushed my son-in-law and mother onto the rocks and could have killed them,” he said.

Injuries documented in photographs

Photographs accompanying Schaller’s complaint show the injured individuals with deep scratches, abrasions and visible blood following the impact with the rocks.

The injuries were visible on their backs, arms and legs, according to the report.

Schaller said he was particularly concerned about what he described as a broader problem involving vessels and speedboats traveling at excessive speeds in the Gulf of Parikia and in the waters between Paros and Antiparos.

He warned that the situation could endanger not only swimmers but also people participating in water sports, including kite surfing and windsurfing.

He also raised concerns about marine life, including sea turtles that may not have enough time to dive when vessels approach at high speed.

Call for stricter enforcement

Schaller called on the authorities to address the issue and urged the Port Police to increase attention to vessel speeds.

“The Port Police should think about this problem,” he said, calling for stricter controls and enforcement of speed limits to protect swimmers and marine life.

He also warned that incidents of this kind could seriously damage Paros’ reputation as a safe tourist destination.
