Tourists are gradually returning to the seaside village of Agia Galini in southern Crete as authorities begin restoring normality following the devastating wildfire that swept through the Rethymno region.
According to Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, firefighting crews remain on the ground working to fully extinguish the blaze in the Krya Vrysi area, while recovery efforts are underway across the affected region.
Tourists Returning to Hotels
Visitors who were evacuated from Agia Galini as a precaution are now returning to their hotels and other accommodations.
Priority is being given to around 100 people who were temporarily housed at the Phaistos Municipal Indoor Sports Hall with assistance from the Municipality of Phaistos and the Region of Crete.
Authorities said visitors who are still unable to return to their original accommodations remain safely housed in the hotels where they were temporarily relocated.
Repairs Underway
Alongside firefighting operations, crews are working to restore essential infrastructure damaged by the fire.
Electricity distribution crews are repairing significant damage to the power network, including destroyed utility poles and sections of power lines.
Road crews are also clearing debris and carrying out repairs to restore normal traffic in the affected areas.
The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection said it is coordinating closely with the Region of Crete, the municipalities of Agios Vasileios and Phaistos, the national electricity distribution operator, and the Greek Police to ensure residents and visitors can return to normal as quickly as possible.
