A very high risk of wildfires has been forecast for Wednesday across several regions in Greece, according to the official Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr).
The areas expected to be under wildfire risk category 4 (very high) include:
- The region of Attica (greater Athens area)
- Central Greece (specifically the regional unit of Euboea)
- The Peloponnese (regional units of Corinth and Argolis)
- The North Aegean (regional units of Lesbos and Chios)
Authorities have placed all relevant government services, regional authorities, and local municipalities on heightened alert to respond quickly in the event of a fire outbreak.
Citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid any outdoor activities that could unintentionally start a fire. These include burning dry grass or branches, using machinery that generates sparks (such as angle grinders or welding tools), operating outdoor grills, or engaging in beekeeping activities that involve smoke. Disposing of lit cigarettes in dry areas is also strongly discouraged.
It is also reminded that during the official fire season, the burning of fields is strictly prohibited. Anyone who spots a fire is urged to immediately contact the Fire Department by dialing 199.
