A major wildfire is currently burning near Ancient Olympia in western Greece, with firefighting forces battling flames across three active fronts. The fire broke out in the Kamenas area, initially igniting in an olive grove before rapidly spreading to a nearby forest due to strong winds.

According to local reports, including ilialive.gr, the situation remains highly critical, as the fire continues to produce spot fires—a phenomenon where embers carried by the wind ignite new blazes ahead of the main fire line. This makes containment efforts particularly challenging.

Intense Ground and Air Response

A significant firefighting force has been deployed to the scene. As of now, the response includes:

  • 51 firefighters
  • 17 fire trucks
  • 2 ground teams on foot
  • 5 aircraft
  • 2 helicopters

These crews are working intensively to suppress the flames and prevent further spread, especially within the forested area. Despite the strength of the fire and the unfavorable wind conditions, no homes are currently at risk, according to the Fire Service.

A Challenging Terrain and High Winds

The region’s dense vegetation and rugged terrain, combined with persistent strong winds, are complicating firefighting efforts. The rapid progression of the fire from cultivated land into forest areas has created a volatile environment, requiring continuous aerial support and coordinated ground efforts.

Ancient Olympia Not Under Threat

While the fire is occurring in the broader area of Ancient Olympia—a site of historical and cultural significance—there is no immediate threat to the archaeological site based on available reports.
