The latest online “bucket lists”, a now ubiquitous mainstay of holiday, travel and short-term platforms on the Internet, has a handful of Greek entries, with Europe’s sunniest cities and “cheapest” islands around the world gauged and listed.
The first survey, sunny European cities, has the Greek capital of Athens – essentially the Athens-Piraeus agglomeration – in 12th place, in somewhat a surprise, given that it’s not in the “Top 10”. This “bucket list” was compiled by the platform Holidu, and based, as it says, on data provided by the World Weather Online site.
Eight out of the top 10 cities deemed as the sunniest in Europe are in Spain, with Cartagena, on the southeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, topping the list.
The other survey, compiled by Travel and Leisure, includes the volcanic Cyclades Island of Milos.
Milos, the southwestern most of the Cyclades in the central Aegean, is renowned for its remote and unusual beaches, as well as the isle where the Venus de Milo was discovered in 1820 – a year before the Greek War of Independence broke out.
The other Greek island cited by the website, and based on its survey of a coteries of travel experts, is Sifnos, also in the Cyclades. The latter is a distinctly off-the-beaten path destination recommended for tranquil holidays, especially by couples.
