Nearly half of Greeks are unsure or unwilling to take a summer vacation this year, citing rising living and travel expenses as the main deterrent, according to results of the latest Alco poll.

When asked about their vacation plans, 49% of respondents said they intended to go on holiday, while the remaining 51% said they either would not or were unsure.

Accommodation Costs the Main Barrier

A staggering 81% of those surveyed pointed to the high cost of accommodation as a key reason for staying home. An additional 80% said they had other financial priorities, while 62% cited expensive travel fares. The cost of dining out also played a role, further discouraging plans for time away.

Where Greeks Are Choosing to Stay

Among those who do plan a holiday, many are opting for more affordable solutions. About 47% said they would stay at their own vacation home or a relative’s, avoiding the cost of commercial lodging. Only 38% said they would stay in a hotel, 7% plan to book an Airbnb, and 8% are choosing camping.

Elderly Greeks Most Affected

The data also reveal a concerning trend among older age groups, who are disproportionately foregoing vacation altogether. Rising prices are preventing many from enjoying a break, reinforcing how the cost-of-living crisis is hitting retirees and lower-income households the hardest.
