As travellers look beyond Europe’s busiest seaside destinations, a new wave of lesser-known islands is emerging as the next big thing.
From Porto Santo near Madeira to Norway’s dramatic Lofoten Islands, these under-the-radar destinations are gaining popularity. Expedia’s list of the most popular islands for 2026 highlights 10 rising destinations known for their natural beauty, cultural attractions, quieter beaches and, in some cases, better value for money.
The travel company found that searches for island holidays have increased by an average of 55% year on year, while social media mentions have risen by around 20%.
Saint Lucia topped the ranking, while three European destinations made the top five, showing that travellers do not have to venture far to discover some of the world’s most exciting emerging island escapes.
Porto Santo, Portugal
Porto Santo ranks second overall and is just a short flight away or an easy two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride from Funchal, the capital of Madeira.
While Madeira has long been recognised as an alternative to the nearby Canary Islands, Porto Santo remains relatively unknown, according to Euronews.
Expedia found that searches for the tiny island—just 11 kilometres across—have risen by around 85%. Visitors can enjoy seemingly endless golden sands, with Praia do Porto Santo stretching for nine kilometres along the coastline. The island is the ultimate embodiment of “island time”, inviting visitors to slow down and embrace a relaxed pace of life.
Syros, Greece
In fourth place is Syros, part of the Cyclades, where whitewashed villages and blue-domed churches are complemented by a thriving food scene and a much more laid-back atmosphere than neighbouring Santorini and Mykonos.
According to Expedia, searches for the island have climbed by 60% as more travellers seek an authentic Greek island experience away from the crowds.
The elegant capital, Ermoupoli, is well worth exploring, with grand Venetian mansions, colourful neoclassical buildings and lively waterfront cafés.
Lofoten Islands, Norway
The Lofoten Islands in northern Norway rank fifth on the list.
This spectacular archipelago of dramatic peaks, crystal-clear fjords and colourful fishing villages feels a world away from Europe’s more crowded holiday destinations. Expedia found that searches for the islands have increased by 50%, as travellers continue to seek outdoor adventures and breathtaking scenery.
Summer brings almost endless daylight under the midnight sun, while from September through spring, visitors have a strong chance of seeing the Northern Lights dancing across the sky. Hike to panoramic viewpoints such as the iconic Reinebringen, kayak through mirror-like fjords or simply explore postcard-perfect villages including Henningsvær and Reine.
