In the 6th installment of the “Ambassadors Series,” ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ International Edition talked to the Polish Ambassador to Greece, Wojciech Ponikiewski. Representing his country since 2024, Wojciech Ponikiewski explained his country’s positions on a series of critical matters on the global stage, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and how the West should come together to address the rising geopolitical challenges.

Mr. Ponikiewski said it was a great honor to be in Greece adding that he “always wanted to be posted here,” adding he felt “extremely lucky to be here [Greece].” He recounted the very close ties between the two peoples, which were rooted in history, referring to the many Polish Philhellenes who took part in Greece’s War of Independence.

The Polish Ambassador broached the ongoing war in Ukraine, including the peace talks between the U.S. and Russia. He cautioned that while everyone desires peace, Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the respect of its national sovereignty are imperative assumptions for sustainable peace.

On the trade war between the EU and the U.S. following the imposition of widespread tariffs by the Trump administration, the Polish Ambassador lauded the stance of the European Union, calling it a “wise position.”

“We have to build up the Ukrainian defense industry to work towards that goal. And the measures that have been initialized and that have been proposed at a European level work toward that direction,” he underlines.

He insisted that the top priority at this point was enhancing European security in the face of the Russian aggression in Ukraine by deepening “bilateral dialogue on security.

The Polish Ambassador to Greece considers the role of culture and education in advancing ties between Greece and Poland as being very important. “We need more cultural presence of Poland in Greece and Greece in Poland,” he underlines. He details the idea of establishing the “Polish season in Greece” and the “Greek season in Poland” to further reinforce the cultural exchange between the two allies.
